Stormy Sebring Innovative Leadership Scholarship

Vance George “Stormy” Sebring was a student at Shasta College in 1973 when he suffered an accidental death. He was Student Body President at the time and had previously served as a Senator. He graduated from Hayfork High School in 1971 after being very active in Student Government, serving as Student Body President his Senior year.

Stormy employed many skills which made him a fine leader, as well as an innovative one. He had considerable people skills and was trusted by the diverse population of the college. He used his ability to see all sides of the picture, to mediate well, and to be tenacious in resolving problems. During his tenure at Shasta College he was able to negotiate terms between too factions of the Student Government in order to move ahead and accomplish the goals which had been set. He also worked with different departments to gain recognition where it was due, and to bring about satisfaction to all involved parties. He was presented an award from the Art Department for his assistance with an issue there.

Stormy was not just an ordinary leader. He was an innovative one; He was very creative in leading others toward a solution to a problem. He loved being a student at Shasta College and especially his work in the Student Government.

The Stormy Sebring Innovative Leadership Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a Shasta College student who has shown leadership qualities similar to those used by Stormy during his Hayfork High School years as well as the two years he spent at Shasta College. It is not restricted to students who serve in Student Government, but is meant to encompass any student who has shown creative ways to be a leader, and by doing so, to be of help to others.

Stormy’s family feels strongly that this is the best way to honor his memory. The award has been given each year for 34 years. In 1974 the award was for $100 and each year the award has increased. For Spring 2014 the amount of the award is $1,950.00.
